Quilts For Friends

These quilts went to various friends for various reasons - Christmas, birthdays and sickness.  Some were made for people I didn't know, but were friends of friends, usually for someone who was ill, and needed a hug.

I only made the two Friendship Star blocks, the rest of the blocks were made by various quilters on a newsgroup I used to be on.  This Hug quilt was given to one of the group, a beginning quilter who had fallen off a ladder and ended up breaking bones and losing a kidney.  She is fine now.

Made for a friend's daughter - hard to see in the photo, but there are two beaded butterflies stitched to the background.  The butterflies were made by my daughter.

Made for a friend's daughter.  The shells were pieced and then appliqued to the background.

Made for a friend's daughter.  The flowers and dragonflies were cut from fabric and appliqued onto the background.

Made for a friend's Mom and Mother-in-law - I made two of these. The angels and moon were appliqued to the background.  The gold wings were purchased and appliqued on, too.

Made for a friend's granddaughter, who was very ill.  The little girl passed away when she was 5 years old.  This is a cheater panel.

Made for my neighbor as a utilitarian truck quilt.  He travels a lot and I told him to use it. If he gets stuck overnight in his truck, use it.  If he needs it for traction under his tires in the snow/ice, use it. If he needs to give it someone in an accident, give it to them.  Made from his own jeans, backed with fleece and tied.  I made another one for his wife.

Made for a friend. This is a machine appliqued wall-hanging. First time I used my machine to applique. Most appliques I do by hand.

Made for my daughter's college roommate and her husband.  This is a stadium quilt, made of corduroy, cotton duck, and denim.  Backed with fleece and tied. I've made 10 of these quilts for various people, from people's old jeans and pants, always backed with fleece and tied.

A friend requested a fall tablerunner.  She chose the fabrics and the setting via email as I sent her photos of various layouts.  This is a Mt. Redoubt design, but I made the squares 3 inches instead of 4 inches, as dictated in the book.

A flannel patchwork, with a flannel back, made for a friend's new granddaughter.

Made for the same friend's granddaughter.

Made for the same friend's granddaughter.

This was the third quilt I made, but the first one I ever finished.  This is pieced and appliqued and I had no idea what I was doing. I cut things out wrong, pieced pieces of fabric wrong, and despite what it looks like, made quite the mess.  This was made for a friend's newborn daughter. The pattern was called Daydreamin' Teddy.

My daughter's German teacher was a huge influence on her and in the last week of school, was scheduled to leave town.  Upon learning this, my daughter frantically called me from school and asked me to buy a present for her, wanting to give the teacher something special before she left.  I asked her favorite colors and instead of buying something, I went to my stash and whipped up this pieced and appliqued quilt out for her.  It is from the book, Small Quilts.

Made for a friend as a tabletopper, in a Christmas gift swap.

Made for a service member in the National Guard.  This quilt is pieced and in the corners is fabric featuring an American flag and eagle.

Made for a friend's daughter.  The quilt is appliqued by hand. The "froth" on the waves is lace, the dolphins were cut from fabric, and the castle on the hill was cut from yet another fabric.  The moon and clouds were appliqued and loosely based on a fairy-tale quilt in yet another book.

This quilt was made for a friend of a friend's little boy, named Connor, who was gravely ill with cancer. He loved bugs, so I used a bug fabric in the center. Connor passed away three days after he got the quilt.  It was given to his younger brother.

This quilt was made for a friend's niece, a young lady celebrating her Bat Mitzvah.

I made this quilt for a friend's son-in-law, a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs.  I used markers to draw the "advertisements" on the walls.  My husband worked at EDS, I loved drinking Pepsi, the next is the Chiefs' emblem and the last is Microsoft's logo.  The walls, crowd and borders were pieced, the other elements were appliqued. I made a variation of this same quilt for my brother.

This was a quilt made for a co-worker with cancer.  All our co-workers signed a square, sent them to me and I put it together. She loved her quilt and recovered.
